I don’t use the dually often. Usually just leave it hooked to the cattle trailer. My fatbed was full so i took it 60 miles for 12ft material. Lots of twists and turns down rough back roads. The power steering pump is relatively new I’d say about 2 years old. The the steering has has always been still but 1-10 it’s an 8. Leaving the back roads about to get on the hwy I hit the breaks and it felt like my truck died (thought it did) in rolled real quick to a side road check the brake and steering fluid all was fine. Waiting and went to drive as the breaks started workin, soon as I go to turn and put pressure on the steering pump the breaks failed. It’s been awhile and the car wash is close to the backroads home. I stopped to wash the truck since it has been sittin and to also give it time to cool down (if it needed cooled down)... leaving the car wash I had no power steering. Lots of turn because i has a good neck. I get on the hwy, thinking i can roll on the side till i hit my exit home (rural area) breaks worked fine slowing down. They only don’t work when I turn and put pressure on the pump.

Should’ve let the truck idle 10-15 minutes before making the trip maybe the cold fluid and high rpms burnt the pump. I have burnt up pumps as a kid doing pasture dounuts at high RPMs.

I guess my question, will a bad steering pump cause break failure? And if it’s 2 years Napa should probably exchange it? I’m sure I have the receipt somewhere. More or less worried about the brakes.... almost took this truck last week to get 9000 pounds of cross ties... without truck brakes would’ve been scary. Even with dual trailer brakes instill had to press the button to engage them all the way making my stop with the 1500hd i have.

The power steering pump does supply power to both the steering and brakes. But usually, applying the brakes robs power from the steering (stand on the brake pedal and try to turn the wheels when standing still).
Your issue may be a problem with power steering pressure, or the hydroboost unit may be going bad on you. You should still have some brakes, even without the hydroboost working, but you'd need a lot more pedal pressure from your foot to get them to work.

Exactly what you mentioned is the problem. Brake peddle gets hard and didn’t want to work when i tried to turn the wheel. Not sure how I’d go about checking power steering pressure. Just priced the hydro boost... pretty expensive.

Try flushing out the power steering system with a synthetic ATF (I use Mobil 1 Syn ATF). You can do that by removing the hose from the driver's side of the hydroboost and sticking a hose leading to a bucket on the fitting. Then suction as much fluid out of the reservoir as you can, and fill it to the brim with new ATF, then start the engine, run it at about 1200 rpm and run the steering wheel from stop to stop multiple times, and apply the brakes as well. Keep the PS pump reservoir full while you do that (it helps if you have assistance). It'll take 2-1/2 to 3 quarts. When you see nice clean fluid coming out into your bucket, restore the hose connection to the hydroboost and top off the reservoir. That MAY help.
But it's kind of the nature of the beast. Ford has a spec somewhere for pump flow. I doubt it's the hydroboost causing the problem.

What kind of fluid did you have in that hydroboost? Remember, it takes automatic transmission fluid, not brake or steering fluid.

I see the line you mentions on the right hand side. The steering. Fluid is red, far from being burnt. I called Napa, they said since the steering has been stiff this entire time even after replacing the pump it could either be the brake booster or the steering box. Does anyone believe it could be the steering box? I do see lines run from the booster into it. Sorta makes sense. Then the steering has always been stiff. They honestly recommended me taking it to a shop since the booster it steering box cost so much and didn’t want to throw money away guessing.

Power steering is for the most part not working now. Stopped by a local garage. He thinks the reman pump I put on is going out. Not allowing enough pressure for the brakes and steering.

When you follow KLHansens instructions and you are turning the wheels back & forth, I found its best to turn the steering wheel nice and slow.

Power steering is completely out now. Pretty sure it’s the pump. Found the receipt, I bought it January 2018.... I can get another free. If it doesn’t fix it I’ll take it to a mechanic. The hydro boost or gearing box are really expensive. I’ve always jumped the gun overthinking causing me to throw money out the window. I hope it’s just simple. The solution always ends up being simple, I just complicate it.

I worry it may be the gear box because steering has always been stiff. That’s why I put a new pump on it last year. They are only $67 so i said might as well see if it helps but the steering was still stiff.
