I have an 03 CC 4X4 7.3. I have a MAC cold air kit, SCMT 1705, gauges, and an aftermarket 4 inch exhaust. I do not know what brand, but the muffler looks like a Bullydog. The muffler was spiral shaped inside. I installed the openings backward, making it a straight pipe. I cannot stand the sound. It sounds like a helicopter outside. The neighbors make fun of the sound and I find myself keeping the windows rolled up. It sounds like it has a miss at low RPM's, although it does not. If i flip the muffler around, will it eliminate the annoying noise (flutter)? It sounds good when the RPM's come up under full throttle. Just cruising down the interstate, I can hear the flutter bouncing off of other cars.

I feel ya, but that is how it will sound naturally. Alternatives would be a Magnaflow muffler with mellow pitch, or an aeroturbine. Their are some guys with the aeros and they love the sound. I would like to hear one. I know a guy with stacks, they sound sweet on a PSD.

Clicky here and go to "Hear It/See It or something like that. They have a wav file of a F350. Sounds pretty good.

I run a straight pipe on a 4" exhaust. It does have the helicopter sound. The way I see it is that those guys that know how a power stroke should sound with a straight pipe are the only people that you should be concerned about. The general public don't know squat about the way these trucks sound. I am not embarrassed how my truck sounds because I know that all the other PSD guys know that my truck should sound this way with a straight pipe.

If you turn the muffler around so the "Louvers" openings are facing the motor,,then it SHOULD sound different. May not eliminate it totaly but it should be much better!

I had mine straight-piped for a little while and wasn't pleased with the sound.

I have an Aeroturbine now and for the first time in over a year heard it from somewhere other than the driver's seat. I like the sound at idle, cruising, and accelerating, but I have decided to get a resonated (4040L) Aeroturbine as an addition since I have an exhaust drone that I'm not too keen about in general.

I think your first try should be to flip it and if you aren't satisfied in a couple of days, get something different - from a Walker BTM to any number of other good options out there.

You will never get rid of the flutter, you can only change the pitch and/or volume. It's by the engine design, firimg order through the turbo.

Some mufflers are designed to be spun. Louder/Quiter. Not sure about bullydogs stuff. Give them a call or search their website. Walker Big Truck Muffler might be a good alternative for you.

I hope I didnt offend anyone with my perception of the sound of a straight pipe. Othet than the sound while just cruising, I love the exhaust. My interior sound is just as quiet as stock, and I can run my SCMT on the hi-perf setting now. I will try and flip it. I just hope there is not an unwanted trade off like increased interior noise or much higher EGT's.

There is another solution that keeps it strait piped and gets rid of the flutter,,, Headers!! gets the firing order balanced before the turbo, or so I've been told. Haven't heard one myself, but I've been told that they sound awesome. When I try to budget headers with the other mods I still need I start thinking it sounds pretty good as is and if somebody else doesn't understand why it sounds that way they don't understand high performance 7.3L Powerstrokes... (there I convinced myself again)

I know that just flipping the muffler around will dampen the flutter noise some. I have tried mine both ways and finally just took it out and put in a straight pipe. It does have the flutter but I can live with it.

Stupid neighbors! Love that one. They are my in-laws and they own Cummins with the Banks exhaust. I can't stand to ride in them they are so loud. Maybe they are jealous. I believe I will just enjoy the helicopter sound from my PSD. Chop Chop.

I recently installed a 4" MBRP exhaust, straight piped, with a 4040L Aeroturbine. It takes away alot of the flutter or I should say it changes to more of a poping sound. Almost like a miss. In fact I thought I had a miss when I first installed it. Get on it a little bit and it changes to a nice growl however. It honestly sounds different than any other 7.3 I've heard, in a good way. I'm thinking about installing a MagnFlow muffler I have laying aroung to see if it changes the idle and low RPM tone.
