I know what it would be like on my gasser but not these. Dont wanna spend the money on a muffler if I dont have to. Is it legal?

Mine has been straight piped for quite a while now /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Have never had a cop look at me. It's quieter than a gasser cause of the turbo, but barks pretty good when you get on it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif. I love it. Like they say you'll either hate it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bleh.gif or love it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Click here to HEAR one straightpiped,,, I had the mic about 6ft from the tailpipe in my driveway. Only reved it to about 22-2500rpm. I like it. I am going with a 4" downpipe,,about 5' of straightpipe and a 45* pipe with a 5" tip on the end,,exiting right in front of the right rear tire soon,,,,! SHOULD be louder and sweeter!

It's a little louder especially when you "get on it". I think it's a sweet sound. I still have the stock exhaust system minus the muffler. The muffler had a run in with a cut off saw and a new piece of pipe took it's place. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif It actually helped my fuel economy a little. You really notice it when you get on it in town. It will rattle the windows.

Is it legal?

[/ QUOTE ]Prolly depends on the state. In the free state of Alabama, darn near anything is legal.

Mine is straight pipe, came that way purchased used. I dont care for it. Once I have $$ I plan to put larger diameter exhaust system with muffler on it.

My home is partway up a long hill. Pulling that hill with a load lets everyone in the neighborhood know I am about. I dont like that.

JimTjr you sure can hear the turbo whistle in that. Thanks. I opened up the header flanges on my chevy for fun---only about a 1/4 inch but the tone at a certain rpm was so intense that my teeth almost fell out. I dont want buy a new muffler but also dont want to keep the radio on high. Guess Ill just have to try and see. I wonder about welding a Y into the system with one leg exiting ahead of the tire but with a cap and bolts. Cap on-exhaust through muffler. Uncap it and its a straight system. Easy to do when needing to pull. Easy to cap up if you need to sneak home to catch the wife and milkman.

Marvin,,really the truck is not that loud. I dont mind it and dont need the radio on loud,,for that reason,, (I am just a kid at 48 and love my ROCK AND ROLL!!) I dont know how loud it is from the outside really,,but in cab is not obnoxious at all really.

I agree....mine is an early 99 with the muffler cut out and a 3 in. pipe welded in to take its place...when ure in the cab with the windwos up u dont hear it at all....but if u roll the windows down and listen to it off of buildings it makes a kickass sound, one that u cant describe, it sounds like a semi.... and the turbo has a really distinct sound on these trucks, if u just sit there and rev it up u cant even really hear it that good, but if you're putting a load on the engine and get on it like goin up a hill or just coming through the gears, the sound it makes will put a smile on ure face, mine does everytime, especially when im in 6th gear going 35 miles per hour through downtown....the sound is unbeatable.....but if u get sick of the noise, all u have to do is roll ure windows up and turn on the ac, u wont hear a thing then....

You will get a tremendous amount of flutter after you whack off the muffler which sounds terrible and you don't notice the noise in the cab much but outside it is quite a bit louder, like someone said above you either love it or hate it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Like they said...

I got a piece of discarded stock pipe for free and paid $40 to muffler man to cut out the old muffler and weld in the pipe I got. Best $$ I've spent. I got pipe from performance shop that does alot of diesel upgrades, otherwise 10' of 3.5" was like $45 (couldn't find a 3ft piece ANYWHERE).

Perfectly Legal. The turbocharger is considered a muffler by federal law, therefore perfectly fine to straight pipe a turbo-diesel

I just thought, most of my pulling is a horse trailer. Wonder if it would blast the horses. Otherwise, Im tempted to cut the thing off tomorrow.

I imagine they would get used to it like anything else.... like I said,,NOT really obnoxiously loud,,,especially with the stock pipes...now ,, if you straightpipe a 4"down pipe with 5" all the way out the back,,,,then it would be louder I imagine,,but mine with the stock exhaust is not terrible.

I've got a 2000 350 dually. No cat no muffler, and to be honest I wouldn't have it any other way. My tip comes out in front of the rear wheels, so I get a little bit more noise in the cab but I've dreamed about owning a diesel since childhood so I'm fine with it, but its not unbearable or anything
