Could my 1997 :ford: F250 PS ever reach a classic status? I doubt it would ever be like owning an old Vette or Mustang, but would anyone keep one of these for just that purpose . . . for it to go up in value as a true classic?

I'm asking because I'm at a crossroads. My 97 is getting to the point where it's going to take thousands to keep it running well, or I can get out now. I don't use the truck a lot so I'm really not thrilled about throwing a lot of money at it . . . unless it will start going UP in value someday in my lifetime.

No. They simply made too many of them. In 1998 Ford sold more powerstroke engines than all of the gas engines the put in trucks combined. That includeds the F150 which you could not even get the stroke in.

Its so hard to say what will and won't be considered a classic.

For instance, they couldn't give away the SuperBirds in the 70's and yet now they are worth a boatload. They made a huge number of 289 Mustangs and those are absolutely classics.

I wouldn't think the PSD will be a classic, but its so hard to tell.

You keep anything long enough, it will be worth something............

That series truck is already a classic in my mind, I owned one and wish now I never sold it. If I could find one with low mileage in good shape I wouldn't hesitate to grab it. My '97 was more comfortable and much more reliable than my Super Dutys are and I really liked the styling better too.

I'd like to think so, but then I'll be catching heck for using it as intended...for work!

Six awesome replies, thank you all.

******* Steve (I didn't know NY had ********! LOL), I know exactly where you're coming from. I should have mentioned that this 97 is my SECOND one! I bought a new leftover 97 in 98 and sold it for $3k less than I paid, 3 years later. I bought a 2001 for all of the new goodies and sold it 14 months later with NO regrets. I went without a pickup for years then saw what appeared to be my old truck for sale on Autotrader. It turned out it wasn't the exact one but I bought it 3 years ago. I too regretted selling my first one and I know I'll regret selling this one too.

I'm still on the fence . . . . I like the truck and for a 12 year old, it's a cream puff. I'm going to have to think about it some more but all of your responses so far have helped. I should probably just keep it but I may be facing about $5k between upcoming repairs and some modifications to make it more usable. After all of that it will be worth exactly what it's worth now so that's the reason for the concern.

Thanks again!

I did a frame off restoration of an '81 F-350 pickup, all new sheet metal, I found a rust free cab and box, plus did the engine and transmission. It took me about 3 months and $6000 to do it and when it was finished I had a 14 year old truck that was in like new condition. I used it in my business for 6 years and had plans of selling it when my ordered '01 was ready, I figured I'd get about $3500 for it. On the return trip from the dealership to pick up my '01, the '81 was rear ended by a Jeep Cherokee at 60mph. The truck was totaled.

The other party's insurance called and offered me $1100 for the truck. I wasn't at all happy with that amount and they agreed to send an adjuster. I showed him all the receipts for the restoration and between that and what he saw left of the truck, they allowed $1800 for my wreck. The point is, I wouldn't do any of the work you propose in expectation of a return on investment, do it for your own use or enjoyment. The truck might be a classic at some point, but I doubt you'll be around when that happens.

By the way, not all of NY is skyscrapers and sidewalks, lol!!

That right there is the end all be all answer. If you have an appreciation for clean older trucks, there is nothing better than seeing a well taken care of OBS going down the road. As time goes on, and more and more find the "Big Junkyard in the Sky," it will become more of a novelty item.

Since it's considered to be one of the best body styles Ford put out in the last 25 years, they very well may become a sought after vehicle one day. Something akin to the 67-72 GM trucks.

Good lines are good lines, no matter how old the truck.....

Ied say keep it say the next 10 years u spent 7-10 grand to keep it road worthy not including any mods thats 7-10 grand for a truck still running like new somewhat or u buy a 35 or 40 grand truck and at the end of the warranty in 10 years or less you spend 3-5grand on things the warranty wont cover plus you spent 35-40k on the truck so you have 40-45k in a truck this isnt saying the truck might die out of warranty also. whereas ur current truck is paid off and could cost u around 5-10k in 10 years time in maintenance parts/fixing ... just my .02s and i like my OBS's and hate new body style so....ya ;>
