Going to put my LUK in this weekend, starting on all the little stuff, figured by the other lack of maintanence the PO did on this thing the fluid would be bad in tranny/t-case, drained tranny-fluid was black, figures..
but after wiping it off and smeeling it had a yellow color and didnt smell like gear oil, what kind of stuff is this?? Is there any ATF that after miles and miles turns black and yellow

wierd thing was the T-case fluid looked good and red

Looks like the fill plug on the tranny was boogered up bad, maybe the guy just gave up and changed the relativly easy t-case fluid.

My ATF is black when I change it in my 5speed. Not sure about the yellow? It might just be a light film of the black oil?

JUST ANOTHER THOUGHT COULD YOU HAVE SOME WATER IN THE ATF? WHEN WATER GETS INTO OIL IT TURNS KINDA WHITEISH-YELLOW. JUST A THOUGHT.

Is it ATF or engine oil?
I've heard of some guys not liking the idea of ATF in a manual, so they put in light gear oil, compressor oil (non detergent) or, just plain old 10w30 cause that's what they had!?

When I got my '88 IDI home, I changed all the fluids, and noticed that the ZF had what seemed like 90W in it! I replaced it with ATF and never had a problem.

It sounds to me like maybe the PO ran 30w non detergent or the like instead of ATF.....

From the looks of the other maintanence items on this truck I doubt that the PO used special Allison fluid!
wonder if I should run some WD40 or sea foam down the shifter hole and out the drain to clean it up in there a little?

doesn't the ford service spec out only synthetic for the zf? I bought some syn a while back but havent changed it out yet. Curious what the old fluid looks like as I had hired a shop to change all those fluids a good while ago.
