Good day folks, I already know that 8.5 to 9 degrees advance is optimum for a stock engine. I have also heard that those who are running a DPS pump should advance the timing 2 degrees. I had my truck timed on Friday & it's set @ 12.3 degrees advanced. I have a DPS turbo pump, new Stad injectors, new Beru glow plugs, new fuel return kit, ATS exhaust snail, ATS 3" exhaust elbow, 4" staight pipe exhaust after the down pipe. Now the question , Should I back the timing down that 1 to 1.5 degrees or leave bloody well alone? Thx in Advance!

My concern would be burning up the GPs that far advanced...... I would mark the present timing, then back it down a dimes thickness. Try running it there and see if it is at the power level you are seeking..

If your injectors have been set to a higher pop-off pressure as they should have been for turbo/high performance duty, you could stand a bit more timing and have the net effect of still firing at the same time as the 8.5 BTDC @ 1400psi. I'd watch your EGT, advancing the timing will raise exhaust temperatures.

2000 rpm for 8.5 deg 1400 rpm will be about 5.5 deg.

Curious where you heard that comment about the DPS pumps. I have one, and in my conversations with Ken, I don't recall him mentioning that. I know he adjusts the timing curve to perform differently, and it is my belief that he retards the timing a bit at higher RPM's to give the engine more time to burn all that fuel. Advancing the timing would negate that. Boy, I bet it clatters loud at idle!

Hi there folks, Yes she is a little louder than it used to be with the original injectors & pump. I just figured 238km (about 140 miles) that the OEM stock set up was worn. I bought the pump thru the classified here on Diesel Stop. Was told it was never installed & it looked brand new when I received it. I believe this is where I got the 2 degrees advance. You guys are right about the EGT's, right now unloaded & playing around with the skinny (smiley) pedal ,I get to 1200. I need this truck more for towing than for fun. So I think I'll back her down a couple of degrees. Is a dimes width what I'm shooting for? Also what will the advance timing do to my new glow plugs? I don't want to spend another $200 for plugs less than a month old. THX much. Rick

What kind of glow plugs cost $200.00???? They cost $9.00 each. Do you have the "Stealership" install them? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gifOkiegringo

Up here in the land of tax the tax ( in Saskatchewan the provincial gov puts on their 6% then that new total is used to calculate the tax for the fed gov). However Official BERU glows from a stealership cost me $22 a piece X 8 = 176 X tax = 198.88 You don't even have enough left out of 2 bills for a large coffee. By the way, aftermarket ( I think they were Bosch) from the locall diesel shop were $17 each. The collective mind said "Beru" & that is what I bought.
