I went to change the fluid this weekend and I cannot get the drain plug to open. There is only 1 plug on the botom of the tranny and its a 3/8" rachet drive. Are there any issues of the drain plugs sezing and not being able to be opened?

I was thinking of using some heat aroung the plug itself on the housing of the tranny. Anyone have any othere Ideas?

Thanks

My only suggestion is a bigger wrench. HOWEVER, I would be certain that the fill plug can be removed BEFORE dumping the oil. The plugs on the ZF, for some reason, are really hard to remove. I had a bear of a time with mine the first time.

I've used a 3/8s Breaker Bar, a short shot from an Impact Wrench or... the 3/8s Breaker Bar with a 12" piece of pipe, for additional leverage.... after a dose of PB penatrateing oil.

BE CAREFULL.... When it lets loose ? It can be a REAL Knuckle Buster /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

I was using a 36" 1/2 breaker bar with the 1/2 to 3/8's adaptor which had a shear pin in it. Needless to say I sheared the pin on the snap-on adaptor /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Looks like I'll get under there tonight and try the impact wrench to get the fill plug loose first.

Thanks guys!!!

Whatever you do, make sure you DON'T use that impact wrench to install the plugs. Can you say broken case. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Are you trying it after a good hard run (warm tranny)? I wouldn't be afraid to apply a little heat to the case in the area of the plug.

If you can't get the filler plug out, you can always use the PTO cover to refill. Not ideal, but in a pinch ...

Mine came out with just a 3/8 breaker bar (~10" long), but this was on the remanned tranny. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

That is a given, I NEVER reinstall anything with air tools.

I didn't think you would, but had to mention it anyway. IIRC, there's a warning tag on the T-case not to use impact wrench on the plugs.

Aren't there o-rings on the plugs? I have a reman in my truck, that was converted to the 6 speed. And the drain plug only has the remnants of an 0-ring and the fill didn't have anything. I bought a plug from Bob Riley for the temp sender, and it came with an o-ring.

This might have been an old thread but it sure was helpful.

I was having trouble removing the fill and drain plugs on my six speed so I searched TDS.

The fill plug was a PITA. When I tried to change out the tranny fluid months ago I could not remove the fill plug. I have a 36" inch pipe I use as a cheater but it would not fit over my ratchet. I bought a 3/8 socket bar that the cheater would fit but then there was not enough room under the truck. :icon_mad:

I sprayed some Fluid Film on both plugs, waited, and then braced my legs on the front axle and the fill plug eventually came out.

The drain plug was easier since there was room for the cheater.

A shop had done the change years ago and they put in Mobil 1 ATF I had bought. I had at least 60-80K miles on the fluid and it looked and smelled just fine. I am sending a sample off to Blackstone for grins and giggles.

The little pump I bought to fill the tranny worked but I think it most have taken at least 75 pumps to empty quart bottle.

I was going to change the transfer case but I did not notice that the plugs were different than the ones on the transmission so I have to go buy some more tools.

The fill and drain plugs did have an O ring.

Later,
Dan

Just to add a little experience with the plugs, I pulled the tranny yesterday to get the bearings redone (gear growl in higher gears
), and pulled the drain plug with my old standby 10" long 3/8" breaker bar. I have tried to use 3/8" extensions in the past and ruined 2 of them when they twisted thru the ball that holds the sockets in place. The first one was from a POS $10 socket set, so wrote that off to the butter-soft steel used. The second was a higer quality extension, but did the same thing. I learned my lesson after the second time
and just use the 40+ year old breaker bar, which must be of stouter stuff.

Another caution. I was trying to save the Mobil1 ATF I just put in when I did the clutch about a month ago, and had a funnel in the mouth of a 2-1/2 gallon jug. When the plug came out, 2 of the 6 quarts overflowed the funnel, which had what I thought was a big enough hole (about 1/2"). I had a Exxon Valdez event on the garage floor.:ack: That stuff REALLY comes out. Another lesson learned.
