When cruising at a stead speed my tranny is making a noise similar to the sound of an air leak. I realize its not an air leak but im using that as an example of the sound. It starts low and gets louder and higher in pitch. It takes about 3-4 seconds of cruising at a constant speed to goo from nothing to squealing/whistling loudly. The best i can do to describe the noise is similar to what you would hear if u had a blower on your air compressor with about a 3/8" dia nozzle and the trigger pulled about halfway down.
If i press the throttle or let off the throttle it goes away or at least gets quiet enough that i cant hear it over the engine. But if i hold the throttle in place for a few seconds it starts making the noise.
I have noticed it primarily in 4th and 5th gear (direct drive and over drive gears).
If i start slow and slowly progress through the gears constantly and steadily accelerating i notice it. Or if i mash the throttle and and run through the gears quickly i don't notice it. I went from zero to 80 without a sound but when i coasted to 50 and then reapplied a constant throttle it was there.
Normal driving around 35-60mph in 4th or 5th gear with constant steady throttle is when it is the most noticeable.
I have never noticed it until tonight.
I pulled it over after about 20min of driving and took out the fill plug. The oil was not hot at all. It was almost the exact same temp as my fingers because i could barely tell when i touched the oil. Its about 35 degrees outside. When i put my finger in the hole i barely had to bend it to touch oil. id say less than 1/4" below the bottom of the fill hole.
The transmission has approximately 6-7K miles on it. IT has Valvoline Mercron V 100% Synthetic in it.
I was told that about this time is when i need to change it since it was a new tranny.
I have had a lot of gear roll over noise with this tranny so I planned to use a different oil.
Maybe Redline MTL or D4, or Syncromesh, or an Amsoil product. Haven't decided yet which is why i haven't changed it yet.

Could changing the fluid possibly fix this issue? What could be causing this noise? Synchros?

Should i stop driving the truck immediately?

Since it's a new transmission, did the shop that installed it offer a warranty? If so I'd show them the noise.

Can you record a video of the noise and post it?

The ZF6 in my truck with 239k miles on it is pretty quite aside from the normal gear rollover at idle.

I purchased the tranny from a place that's about 2.5 hours from my home. I installed the tranny myself. I purchased a 3 year unlimited mile warranty with the tranny. It's been less than a year since I bought it.
Here is a video of the noise.

I found the video under your photobucket account. Wow that shifter boot is terrible. Honestly I'd say replace the boot with an OEM one and then listen. I can remember when my shifter boot was compromised and I thought the transmission was ready to go with all the extra sounds. Replaced the boot and it's pretty darn quiet for how many miles it has. Maybe you are hearing things you shouldn't if the boot was in better shape?

I bought a case of Mobile1 Fully Synthetic ATF today and was gonig to put that in, but... I cant find my transfer pump. Im in the process of moving.
I really would like to try MTL. Or maybe this concoction i read about. It was MTL, 0w40, and some molly based lube. Not sure why the 0w40 though.
I need to do my transfer case while im at it. but aint decided what to put in there yet either.

I use Pennzoil synchromesh in the ZF6 and all my other manual transmissions - really good stuff.

I'd stay away from synthetics as you need some friction for the synchronizer/cone to work properly. You could always fill from the shifter if you can't find the transfer pump.

The place i bought it said to only use 100% Synthestic Fluid in it. I asked about weight and they said just Mercron V is fine but anything close will work. brand didnt matter but stressed 100% Synthetic no mater what i did.
