When cruising at a stead speed my tranny is making a noise similar to the sound of an air leak. I realize its not an air leak but im using that as an example of the sound. It starts low and gets louder and higher in pitch. It takes about 3-4 seconds of cruising at a constant speed to goo from nothing to squealing/whistling loudly. The best i can do to describe the noise is similar to what you would hear if u had a blower on your air compressor with about a 3/8" dia nozzle and the trigger pulled about halfway down.
If i press the throttle or let off the throttle it goes away or at least gets quiet enough that i cant hear it over the engine. But if i hold the throttle in place for a few seconds it starts making the noise.
I have noticed it primarily in 4th and 5th gear (direct drive and over drive gears).
If i start slow and slowly progress through the gears constantly and steadily accelerating i notice it. Or if i mash the throttle and and run through the gears quickly i don't notice it. I went from zero to 80 without a sound but when i coasted to 50 and then reapplied a constant throttle it was there.
Normal driving around 35-60mph in 4th or 5th gear with constant steady throttle is when it is the most noticeable.
I have never noticed it until tonight.
I pulled it over after about 20min of driving and took out the fill plug. The oil was not hot at all. It was almost the exact same temp as my fingers because i could barely tell when i touched the oil. Its about 35 degrees outside. When i put my finger in the hole i barely had to bend it to touch oil. id say less than 1/4" below the bottom of the fill hole.
The transmission has approximately 6-7K miles on it. IT has Valvoline Mercron V 100% Synthetic in it.
I was told that about this time is when i need to change it since it was a new tranny.
I have had a lot of gear roll over noise with this tranny so I planned to use a different oil.
Maybe Redline MTL or D4, or Syncromesh, or an Amsoil product. Haven't decided yet which is why i haven't changed it yet.
Could changing the fluid possibly fix this issue? What could be causing this noise? Synchros?
Should i stop driving the truck immediately?
