I was wondering if anyone here knew anything about the 3116 CAT motors. My dad has a 95 chevy kodiak with the 3116. it only has 46,000 and he has never had a problem with it until recently. It wont start. it didnt give us any warning signs. he went to a gas station shut it off and when he went to start it, it just cranks. he got it home w/ a friends help. we replaced the fuel filter and got fuel coming out after the pump and it still wont start. it just cranks. no one we have talk to seems to knw anything about it. they just want to tow it into their shop to look at it. thank u to anyone that has any tips or any ideas.

First things we check are the shut-off solenoid and to see if the governor is controlling the rack. If the shut off solenoid is clicking but the governor is not controlling the rack, the governor needs rebuilt. There is a 'snap ring' on a shaft in there that comes loose.

It is certainly consistent that that sort of a problem. I have one of those things ina '94 GMC so I guess I better be on the lookout for it, However when you have a warm diesel engine that suddenly doesn't run, the fuel shutoff staying shut off certainly is a likely
suspect. We have had similar issues with both the Cummins 8.3
and the IH DT466 (mechancial engines) which have external selonoids which operate a mechanical shuthdown. Those at least you can override with a piece of baling wire...
