Copper washer for oil drain plug

I'm leaking oil right at the drain plug. It's only a little, but I can't stand oil leaks. I went to the dealer to buy a new copper washer, and after going about 5 rounds with Young Einstien behind the counter, I gave up. According to him the copper washer cannot be purchased, even if a new drain plug is being purchased. Can anyone tell me where I can buy these elusive copper washers? Any help will be greatly appreciated. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif Kevin

Man, do yourself a favor and buy a Fumoto oil drain valve. I have had absolutely zero problems since I put mine in. My oil changes are much more enjoyable and easy now. I have a lot more options on what I drain into and it is clean /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

Kevin,

Young Einstein may be right. I have the exact same problem right now so I went to the Ford house to buy some washers. They found the part but it was backordered. They said they'd call me when they came in. That was a month ago. Maybe Ford is trying to corner the copper market? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif At any rate, I tried the same thing you did with the same end result.
I bought a Fumoto from here and I'll install it at the next oil change. I believe I saw one in the for sale section here last week too. .......JIM

TYoung Einstien behind the counter is wrong, I got some from the dealer before I put the drain valve in, let me check when I get home I might still have the ford / dealer part number.

Thanks to Jim and Jeff for suggesting the Fumoto, I thought about getting one, then wrote it off when I read about 1 guy, then a 2nd who hit road debris that ripped off their fumoto drain valves subsequently dumping all of their oil on the highway. I realize the chance of that happening is remote, but I tow a TT from Long Island to Florida at least twice a year as well as other places, and I'm just not willing to risk it, so I just want to stick with the pain in the shorts drain plug.

My 99 does not have a copper washer. it has a white nylon washer that is part of the bolt head. it's molded around the shank for a tight fit but is also molded so that it comes up about half way on the flats of the bolt head. hasn't leaked and i haven't had any problems.

Go HERE if you want to order the Ford copper gaskets.

Fumoto is good option if you have a 4 x 4.

I have purchased the Auto Zone, plastic and copper style washers as well and they'll all leak eventually if you re-use them.

I change oil every month and I just install a new Ford $1.00 copper washer each time.

Like you, little leaks bother me and I've removed the plug and installed a new washer after a recent oil change, resulted in the loss of a quart or so of oil, a big mess in the driveway...........all for a $1.00 washer.....never again!

You need to try the vacumn trick. thats were you hook up your shop vac to the oil fill and let it run then take the plue out and put it back without a drop of oil. I have seen it work.

The young Einstein is wrong. I just purchased a washer and plug from my local Ford dealer. Went there after the idiot at Auto Zone tried to sell me the plastic washer and plug. His three brain cells were really active after I told him I wasn't going to trust a $5000 engine to his cheap $2.00 part and left it on the counter.

It would be possible to make a shield/guard for the drain valve that bolts to the pan bolts.. then you wouldnt have to worry about it.

I need to go pick up a Fumoto too, as my drain plug is seeping pretty badly. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Just got back from AutoZone and they had copper washers hanging in the oil section. They had several sizes, so you might want to take yours with you. They also had a couple of replacement plugs that let you drain your oil without removing your plug.

Hope this helps.

Here is the FORD Part # 3C3Z-6734-AA /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

I got one for free from a friend of mine that services a fleet 30+ ambulances with 7.3's /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

Very common item in any injection or diesel shop. I replaced one with a washer from a deutz diesel that has a little rubber ring on the inside edge, no leakie no more...

I changed mine at every oil change. That is until I installed a Fumoto valve. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

How far below the oil pan does the Fumoto valve stick down. Has anyone had theirs ripped off under normal use?

Been there, done that. (Read the discussions on Fumoto valves, not had one ripped off.)

This has been beat to death, but I have yet to see anyone post, "Yes, I tore mine off on a (pick one) [stump] [pothole] [other]."

Crawl under your truck and see how high the oil pan sits, then envision what other critical items (steering linkage, front differential, etc.) would be gone before an obstruction got to the Fumoto valve (which sticks down maybe 1-1/2".)

Ain't gonna happen, especially under "normal use".

Pep Boys, O'Reilly, AutoZone all have washers. I put on a "banana pan" and now have complete draining of the old oil. It came with a stainless steel magnetic drain plug that had been drilled for safety wire and an aluminum washer.... Pretty slick set up!
The story about the Fumoto that had been knocked off seems bogus - there's a frame member and a bash plate protecting the oil pan and drain plug and a low oil sensor in the pan that should have alerted him to the low oil condition. Don't believe everything you hear.
