4 wheel drive not working

Hey guys, easier to post here and ask the fellow owners versus goggle, although after this post that will be my next move.

I have a 2017 F250 4WD and was backing into lake Sunday and noticed the 4WD not engaging. I move the selector on dash from 2WD to 4WD High or Low and dont hear the usual engagement. Any idea on what relay or fuse to check or where to start ?

Ive never seen you give a 5 word post, lol ....... No check engine lights or anything on the dash, do I still need a scan tool ? When I move the dash switch everything seems normal, the dash changes to either 4 high to 4 low. Its as if the truck doesn't know the shift didn't occur

So I couldn't even pull my Jetski up a steep slope after pulling it out of the water, this sucks ................... Today, I changed the oil, filter, and both diesel filters. I already dropped the sample at post office and will post results in few weeks. While under the truck, I had a buddy switch into 4WD low, 4WD High with dash switch and could hear the actuator on transfer case clicking, this leads me to believe the motor on transfer case is working. I manually locked the hubs from Auto to locked, switched to 4WD Low and drove down to the ramp. The truck appeared to be in 4WD Low based on RPMs but was just 2WD because when I turned the wheel all the way to the side, it didn't do the usual lunging like it does in 4WD.

ford_doctor- Can you please offer me suggestions on where to go next ? I went to Advanced and Autozone and due to Virus they are not pulling codes? Dont mean to cry but I really dont wanna pay the Ford Dealer to check right now, I dont know how much longer we are going to be working due to Virus and right now Im just lucky to have a continued check versus tapping reserves.

You’ll need a device that can read the codes for your truck, I know from others posts that the auto parts stores can’t read the codes unless they have updated something in the newer trucks.

As for your 4 wheel drive, do you know if your transfer case output shaft is turning when in 4 Lo/High. Sounds like you had your truck off key on checking your dash switch (hearing click in transfer case) When I was going through my truck (new to me in ‘18) I had the whole truck on jack stands, making sure it was “rock solid”, and engaged the 4 wheel drive, inspecting the output shaft, front differential, axles, u-joints and auto/lock hubs.

Ford Doctor is right—you need to pull codes. Being mechanical by trade If it was me I’d start at the output shaft and if turning work my way out through each component to the hubs.
I will go to shop later in the week and put truck on stands to verify what is going on.


So, let us start with manually locking the hubs at the wheels and see if the 4X4 works in general. That will verify that the transfer case is indeed engaging the front driveshaft and the axles are turning. If I missed that you have done that already I apologize.

Hubs have been manually locked at wheel, switch changed on dash. While truck was running switch on dash was changed, I was under truck and heard motor doing something. I drove truck down the boat ramp and can verify that trans went into low range but was not in 4WD.

After a visual inspection for obvious mechanical concerns I would scan all of the relevant modules for codes. The 4X4 can have a fault and not turn on any warning lights. It's not safety or emissions relevant system. Even if there are no codes a scan tool will be instrumental in performing diagnostics. Yes there are fuses you could check - #30, #69, #80 and #88 in the battery junction box are the most relevant and specific to the 4X4.

If the light changes from 4X2 to 4X4 the transfer case shift motor is operating so there could be a mechanical failure or the hub lock system is malfunctioning.

Did you try manually locking the hubs and putting the truck into 4X4?

I checked the fuses for the first time today, thank goodness Ive been busy with work. I checked all the fuses and they appear to be good. Ive done a lot of googling tonight and ran into a photo on a older Ford that says when you remove the motor, the transfer case is labeled 2wd, 4H and 4L. Can anybody tell me if this is the same on our trucks ? This would help me to diagnose my issue. I haven't taken it to a dealer because like many, I dont know how much longer I will have my job and am watching my pennies.

(Post 11) that’s why I suggested you start at the transfer case and go towards the hubs.....now you know your hubs aren’t engaging....Maybe. Can’t see in your video, did you check your axles/u-joints coming out of the front differential to see if either side is rotating? Do you still have the hubs in the “Lock” position? You can turn the front wheels and should be able to see the u-joints/axle(s) turning- don’t have to climb under. Then if confirmed (rotation) time to get into the hubs.
Ive been out of town and very busy with work, I was going in the order I could until I got back to my warehouse/shop. Thanks for the suggestion.

With both hubs locked, and me rotating either wheel the clicking noise was present. Unlocked passengers side hub and turned passengers tire and no noise. Spin drivers wheel with hub locked and with passengers locked and unlocked and noise is present. Lock drivers side, spin wheel and look on wheel side of Ujoints and wheel side spin and diff side no spin. Do same on Passengers with hub locked and both sides spin. This and the fact that noise was isolated with stethoscope to drivers side hub lead me to the failure point.

Will go to parts house and replace when time allows.

Thanks to all who offered advise and helped, I just wasn't in a situation to really look hard. When I finally did, it was pretty obvious. I will snap pictures of the broken hub once I return back home.(Prob next week)
