Air sound at low rpm's

Hi All -

Picked up an old f350 dump body 7.3l psd. 63,000 on the engine. Truck seems to be running well, however sometimes I hear what sounds like an loud air leak while driving. Hard to tell exactly where it is coming from while I am driving, but best guess is below the drivers seat. This of course could be mis-leading.

Only happens when I am on the gas very lightly -- engine is usually between 1000 - 1500rpm's, so barely any gas --- sometimes when slowing down to make a turn, just before accelerating through it. The sound starts -- again, like an air compressor venting air --- and will go away if I let off the gas for a second and accelerate afterwards.

I have two 6.0's and am very familiar with that engine but don't know anything about the 7.3 any thoughts?

thanks!

This is normal. When the outside air temp is "cold" (cant remember the exact temp) and your oil temp is below 150° the blow off valve will open to bypass the boost to help warm the engine.

How in the World did you find a 7.3 with that low of mileage?

Almost good explanation

When its cold the EBPV (exhaust back pressure valve) will close to help warming up the engine. There is no blow off valve on these engines but wastegate

OP
Is it doing it only when cold or also when the engine is warm?

I just bought a1996 F350 4Dr Crew with 85,500 documented miles from Pope AFB. The Dreams do live and exist. Love this Site.

Unplug the EBPV if you don't like it. Won't hurt anything. unplugged mine day 1.
