Bad Camshaft in 6.4 PSD????

Hey guys, I've been doing some fleet work on a guys company vehicles, up to this point, they have all been 6.0 and 7.3 PSD's (cargo and ambulances).
Anyways, they have a 2010 SRW ambulance with the 6.4 PSD, and it broke down. So, they just had it pushed into a service shop right close to where it was broke down.
The shop told them it was bad camshaft.
Anyways....ambulance is on its way to my shop, but before it gets here, I wanted to ask you guys:

Is that common....a bad camshaft on a 6.4? Keep in mind this is BONESTOCK 6.4 with just a tick over 100K miles on it.

My first thought was, NO WAY, because for one, I have yet to come across a bad cam in ANY of the Big 3's...CTD, D-Max, 6.0, 7.3's that have been stock and modded.
I have yet to touch a 6.4, so wanted to check with you guys.

Is this a known problem...bad cams? Or would it be a freak occurrence if it turns out to be a bad cam?

Thanks guys.

fuel dilution in oil worsened by extended idling. Poor lubrication makes rocker arms wear. Roller tappets suffer from the poor lubrication and the hammering of clearance from rocker wear and then tappet fails and wipes out a lobe on cam. The crap part is the potential for the metal from failed tappet and cam wiping out other things in engine.

Just seems like an odd occurrence. This company has been around for a number of years, runs 360+ full times employees, over a 1000 employees in general, HUNDREDS of fleet vans/ambulances, and this is the first time I have come across a bad cam.

I mean, when truck gets here Im gonna check it out, I was just more curious to see if this is a COMMON thing amongst the 6.4, as I have yet to run into with the 7.3, 6.0's, D-Max, and CTD's.

Thanks for input.

I personally would want to actually see the truck and make my own diagnosis. Seems we are lacking much in the way of diagnostic details at this point. Some of the DTS members have reported seeing a bad cam and lifter in 6.4L engines and 6.0L engines as well. I personally have only seen a handful on 6.0L and none on the 6.4L... but a lot of worn rocker tips and broken rockers

Well once I tear into it, but NOT before I diagnose it, I'll be able to tell bad cam/rocker arm/valve/lifter, or maybe NONE of the above.

My question was, is this a COMMON occurrence on the 6.4L...a bad/wiped cam?
It appears it is NOT a common problem, and my thoughts at this point is, that it probably ISNT a bad cam.

The point of this thread was, finding common bugs, things that TYPICALLY go bad.

Example:
Long/no start/shut off while running down the road, on 6.0, PROB IPR screen damaged.

Obviously the 6.0 has A LOT of "known" problems, and when you have an issue, you know where and what top check first. And as mentioned above, Ive done my fair share of 6.0 and 7.3's now.

This in essence will be my first 6.4 IF I have to dive into the motor. I will have more updates and info later on, because at this point, I don't even know WHAT the 6.4 is doing. It could be out of diesel fuel for all I know. What I know is, the 6.4 stalled, towed/pushed into shop in small town, mechanic diagnosed it as a bad cam.

My guy called me, and my first reaction was, "Bad cam? 2010? Stock motor...100K miles?" Im betting AGAINST it.
Get it away from that shop and get it hauled to me."

I am awaiting the 6.4 and should be here this coming week.

Thanks guys

I would agree that 6.4L camshaft damage is not COMMON at all, but it has been seen. Fuel pump leaks, injectors, worn rocker tips, EGR valves, Turbochargers, Radiator Hoses, Thermostats, Radiators are more common. More often than not a 6.4L is expensive to repair.

OK guys, I have an interesting twist to this diagnosis on the "6.4".

Well, like I was saying above, I've been doing a lot of stuff on the 6.0 and 7.3's on service/maintenance/repair, and nothing really on the 6.4.

Well, I still haven't gotten van to my shop yet, but, here is the twist:

The motor isn't even a 6.4, it's a 6.0!

I was doing more research on the bad cam/6.4, and come to find out, the 6.4 is not even available in the 2010 E-350!

So...this guy has diagnosed this motor as having a bad cam, but he doesn't even know what MOTOR it is! WOW!

Im very curious to see what is actually the problem with this motor now, if at all anything.

The company had me call the repair shop and talk to them (their feeling was, if I felt it was a bad cam, and the repair shop cost was in line with what I would charge, they would just save on another tow).

So, when I called the guy and he tells me it's 6.4, I honestly don't even bat an eye, because of the year model (2010). After talking to the guy, I just felt in general he wasn't sure it was bad cam, and I told the company it was best to get it to me.

I have been preparing for this (obviously) and that is when I ran into that the 2010 E series, still have the 6.0 PSD.

So, just to be sure, I hopped over into the E series section here on the diesel stop, and asked, and the guys confirmed what I had suspected. NO 6.4 in the 2010 E-series!

LOL!

So, my assumption on his diagnosis as bad cam as being "odd" is probably a spot on assumption, since the guy didn't even know he was working on a 6.0.

yep 6.4 never in a van wouldn't fit ....... bring this to the attention of the van owners and get it towed on over to you ... and in my unprofessional opinion I think the 6.0 in the van has a few different things that set it apart from the 07 and earlier versions

Yeah in fact, this will be one of the "newer" vans I've worked on. Everything to date has been @ '06/'07 and earlier. This one being an '10, again, I didn't even bat an eye when the guy said 6.4.

The van should be at the shop tomorrow and I'll get the scoop on it and let you guys know what I find out.

Thanks again for everyone's input.
