Blue exhaust smoke after getting the air out of injector system lines ?

I am now getting a fair amount of blue exhaust smoke ( most noticeable at idle ) after dealing with very hard to find air leak in the fuel injection system on my 1994 F240 7.3 IDI . It barely had any visible smoke prior to dealing with this problem . Could I have broken a ring with all that "dry" cranking ? I also tried a <1 sec squirt of starting fluid in the air cleaner intake ( glow plugs cycled off ) once or twice or during this process . Any ideas what is wrong ? What can I do to diagnose this further ? - Thanks

cdnsarguy - It generally had the first type of smoke on your list when cold starting but it would eventually stop . Now there is more smoke when started and it stays after it has warmed up . It is not belching heavy smoke (like a mosquito fogger) but it is very noticeable . I test drove it hard with the auto trans selector in 2nd gear to get the rpms up to the high 2000s . I rapidly accelerated and deceleeated . When I rapidly backed of the throttle, there was big puff of what was seems to me as blue smoke . Anyone have any pictures of white-blue vs blue smoke just to make sure tht I am describing blue smoke ?


I think that oil may be getting into the combustion chamber. As this point I the only things I can think of doing are checking blow-by ( oil filler cap ? )and cracking injector lines on by one and doing a compression or leakdown test on the cyl(s) that seem(s) to be the weak.



Back to my original question - could I have damaged my engine internally from my extended cranking and my couple of tries using starting fluid after the glow plugs cycled to off or could ties b e an inj problem. At this point I am expecting the worse case but ( cracker ring or somethine ) it is difficult for me to belive that it could have happened that way.

Any more recommendtions comments and discussion is a appreciated.

Tow Driver - How long would it take for the rings to re-seat if they were loosened up ?

The engine is a NA model (non-turbo) .

It seems like the exhaust odor is much stronger than before .

I just checked the oil filler area for blow-by . There is light puffing of smoke inside the oil filler hole(or maybe just IP gear turning ). I did not feel any pressure and there was no smoke belching out . Is that a good enough quickie test ? If it is not blowby past the rings , what should I check next ?
These are pix of the smoke. From what you see in the photos Is it blue (oil burning) or white-blue (indicative of fuel -air problems? ) ? It sure has a strong odor and burns my eyes -

The engine seems to idle smoothly . The smoke does increase with RPM . It does get really bad at high RPM . I cracked the injector lines and each one made the engine run rough . The prior air leak was in a bad connection between the tank and the intake of my electric lift pump . I did not do anything with the injectors when troubleshooting the air leak leak except for cracking the lines and pulling one line loose to see if fuel was getting to them . The return line connections seem to be flowing ok . Wouldn't a problem with an injector make it run bad ? I even ran separate fuel and supply lines to a fuel can thinking maybe that it was slight air problem ( per cdn - Chassis fuel system air leaks may also cause continuous heavy blue-white smoke) . I am now beginning to think the worse case even though there is no crankcase blow by . It really is smoking badly at high rpm . If it is a cracked ring or head etc why no blowby ? I am really lost on this one . If it were missing or something I would pull an injector and check compression but I don't know what to do next ?

How does the engine idle ? open each injector line one at a time engine should run rough,then close do this to all injectors if it doesn't run rough it could be a bad injector. What did you do to repair air leak, o rings top of injectors? did you get any dirt in the top of the injector? check return lines for kinks. If rings were a problem crankcase pressures would be high

I remove the injectors today. They all seemed about the same- all sort with clean slightly oily body and carbonized gunk on the tip . As they are painted gray and dated 3/93 I presume that they are the original set . I am in the processor of shopping for aset on or rebuilt injectors. I hope to gut one of these and plumb it up a compression tester so I can check engine compression .

An update here . I removed the fuel injectors and had them tested at a local diesel shop ( Tubo Diesel and Electric , Marietta, GA) . One was real bad and the rest were way off according to gut who tested them . I puchased a new set of Delphi code E replacements (LJCK01101) installed them . It still smokes and maybe runs slightly rougher but maybe has little more power . Because of the slightly rougher running, I wonder if I screwed up an injector nozzle during installation ( physical damage or overtightening) although cracking line show about the same drop in rpm for each cyl . Assuming that the injector install is OK , it is looking more like the pump is bad. Any help here is greatly appreciated, - Thanks

Update - I pulled the injectors and had them test them and everything was fine . I installed a rebuilt IP from local rebuilder where I purchsed the injectors . After the new injectors were re-installed and the "new" pump was installed, it ran with no more smoke but had a miss. I to it to the place where I purchased the IP for timi9ng and diagnostics and they said after noticing a little bit of fuel residue in the valley pan id one of the lines on the pump was loose (strange I did notice that ). They tightened all of pump lines and timed it . I runs great . No smoke and way more power than it had previously had. However, I smelled avery faint odor of raw diesel charging me $100 . I washed out the engine compartment with purple degreaser and water ( engine cold of course). No smells after washing everything . After it all dried out I placed a wad of paper towels under the pump so that could detect any leaks. I have driven the truck around for a few hours and now the paper towel has a diesel odor (but not wet . I presume that either the pump or the lines are leaking . I don't want to touch anything until I talk to the shop next week because I want them to be responsible . - Thanks
