Coolant leak on 2008 F250 6.4L (lower radiator hose?)

I just bought a 2008 F250 6.4L (Job 3) with 50K miles. The truck is leaking coolant but only when cold and parked. It was sitting for about a year and started leaking about six months in. Once I topped up the levels and ran the truck the leak stopped but it just came back last night

It's dripping from the front center of the truck. I believe the coolant is dropping off the lower radiator hose but I haven't been able to get under there yet for a closer look. It could obviously be coming from somewhere else higher up and just dripping from there.

From what I've read, this sounds more likely to be a hose issue rather than a radiator issue. I'll be calling the dealer to setup an appointment but I was curious what the consensus might be. The truck is still under the powertrain warranty but I'm not sure if the cooling system is covered (it's certainly part of the powertrain but...). There is also a second extended warranty that should over it if it's the radiator and not just hoses.

Thanks!

It doesn't look like the other warranty will cover hoses either but it would cover the radiator if that ends up being the problem.

The amount of coolant on the ground is pretty substantial after it's been parked for a while.

Very annoying.

It looks like I was wrong. It's dripping while the engine is running as well. I just crawled under the truck and I can see where it's leaking from. It's coming from the left side of the engine where the hose that crosses under the radiator connects (which I assume is the lower radiator hose). That end is clearly marked "ENG" and the drip is obvious.

It's unlikely that'll be covered by the extended warranty since it excludes hoses. Is there any reason to go to the dealer for the hose replacement versus any other reputable mechanic? It seems like you only have to replace half the hose (from the engine to where it joins under the radiator).

My hose has black ends so I guess it's a single O ring.

Thanks (again)!

That's very interesting. Everything else I've read indicates that it's not covered.

Did you have to fight for it or did they just cover it?

Thanks!

I had an upper radiator hose leak a few months back and my dealer replaced both upper and lower radiator hoses with the white collar ones under 5 yr 100,000 mile warranty.

A question for those who paid for a lower hose replacement... was that at the dealer? It looks like the cost for the hose (well, half a hose) and coolant is about $140. I figure it's going to cost me about $100 less than the dealer to have my usual guy work on the truck but I'm wondering if I'd be better off at the dealer in case there are other issues?

Wow! Did you have to replace the whole hose or just the engine side half? I got a quote today from a local Ford truck center for $69 (on the half hose). The part number is AC3Z8286A which seems to be right (and is the new double O ring hose).

My truck has been parked while I figured this out and it was really dripping. I got under there and found that I could rotate the hose where it connects to the engine. I fiddled a bit and got the leak to pretty much stop for now.

I think I'm going to just go buy the hose and coolant and do the deed. I want to avoid getting raped by the dealer if at all possible.

Just a follow up on this... I talked to a few dealers and all reported back that it would not be covered by the warranty (as expected). Since the leak was obviously from the lower radiator hose and there were no other leaks, I went ahead and got the hose and did the repair. As of right now, the problem appears to be solved. I spent less than $100 for the hose, coolant and water.
