Fuel leak on front differential

So, tonight I noticed that the front diff, and the steering dampener are wet with what looks like fuel. So, after looking closer, I can see that most of the oil pan is wet, mostly towards the front of the engine, and its dripping onto the crossmember, then onto the diff housing and steering stabilizer and tie rod.

Any idea what would be causing this? It is definately diesel.

I wondered if it wasn't the fuel bowl/fuel drain o-rings, or if it wasn't something else. I looked in the valley between the heads, and no diesel there, and the HPOP under the fuel bown has some signs of moisture, but nothing is soaking wet.

The steel intake housing that sits on the cylinder head, looks to be a bit moist, but not sure if its diesel or oil, but it isn't soaked either.

It definately looks like the moisture runs from the front of the oil pan to the rear.

Also, I have some moisture at the rear of the block, on both sides by the bellhousing, not sure if there is somewhere where it can leak from the valley down back there without leaving a puddle in the valley.

I just swapped out the rubber flares on the hard to get pass side line that goes to the back of the head and to the pump, and it is still dry.

Any ideas? I need to get it fixed for a trip next weekend.

Look at the fuel bowl from the top. Just behind it is the fuel drain valve. There is a short hose coming off it down next to the oil pan. Ford having a bad time with O rings with the low sulfer fuel. If it is coming from here, Get a O ring kit from dealer or on line sponser on this site. I had to change mine out. Took care of the leak. Its easy to change.

Does it leak out of the hose onto the subframe and that area? In other words, should I see moisture coming out of the bottom of the hose, or should I see the moisture under the bowl? There isn't any moisture on the hose where it fits to drain valve, but maybe under it where I can't so easily see?

Mine was leakn through the sediment valve its self. It showed no signs of leaks any where else. I thought a left the valve open but is was shut. I had to go to the dealer to get mine. It is simple to replace. Good luck /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

It sounds as thought the o-rings wnt bad in the fuel bowl drain valve. If there is fuel comming out of the tube that drains the fuel bowl and the yellow valve is shut, that would be your prob. The drain tune comes down to right in front of your pan and crossmember. You can either replace the whole vale or just re o-ring it.

That's the drain point from the fuel filter drain valve. Take a look at the 7.3L Power Stroke Engine and Drivetrain FAQ subforum for a writeup on changing the o-rings on the drain valve.

Not to hijack this thread, but I've had a mental question about the O-ring issue. If the valve leaks, does the leaking fuel exit from the drain tube? If so, is plugging the tube a reasonable temporary fix?

Sounds to me like you may have the same problem I am currently going through. My leak is coming from the flexible supply line the lies on top of the engine cradle, it connects to the the the steel line that runs up the front of the engine. Mine started leaking when I did the FPR mod and jacked up the fuel pressure. It was leaking just as you described, all over the crossmember, diff, and steering linkages. Big mess!!!
If that is your problem, be prepared when you go get new lines "$$$" through Ford.

I have a leak as well... And yesterday when it was real cold and the truck kicked into high idle in the driveway I noticed it was coming out at a preaty rapid pace. More like a stream than a drip. Still think its the same O-rings? I am going to poke my head under the hood some more today.

Yep. Poke your head under the front first and see where it is coming from.

If that is the line which is leaking, I can offer a part #. You have to buy the supply and return line together!!! Around $120 from Ford. I wish they would use normal fittings /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif
Unfortunatly the line on my truck had a rupture, if it is leaking from a fitting you may be able to replace a o-ring.

If that drain line is leaking and the valve is turned off, it is the o-rings

arisley is right. The o-rings seal both the inside and outside of the drain valve, so it can leak either way or both. See the write-up at the end of my sig..
