How To Find Out Where A Car Was Originally Registered

The car I’m looking at has been titled in a couple of states, but I’m curious about where it started out originally. That feels important because cars from snowy states have salt damage underneath, and coastal cars can rust from sea air. Plus some states have tougher inspection laws than others. Does anyone know if there’s a way to track where a car was first registered and the list of states it’s lived in since.

Probably not. Most states DMV will not share information due to privacy concerns. And they probably won't just because it takes time to do the research. With the VIN, you can generally get the plant it was manufactured at. If it's a Ford, and you can find a dealer who will do it for you, and OAISIS report would have City and State where repairs were done, but only if the work was done at a Ford dealer.

Seems like you could cut to the chase, and just LOOK FOR RUST. If there isn't any, would it matter if it had been registered in Seattle or Anchorage? If there is, would it matter if it was registered in Amarillo?

What Steve said. (y) Vehicle history is nice to have, but rust is pretty evident and hard to hide.

I'm waiting for them to post the fantastic site that they found where you can get a window sticker for a small price.

I got one for my '16 PIU via CarFax (free through a dealership). Isn't regular CarFax pretty cheap? Do the regular ones not include this? Or are you only talking about stickers for these old trucks?
