Well, I am new here and know nothing of fords, my father in-law wants to put a new exhaust on his 99 crew 4x4 s-box man-tran. He wants cheapest, and better sound. His has a Cat. on it. I found a nice turbo back kit from summit but it cuts out the cat. Here in CA diesels are smog exempt but I know Fed law prohibits removal of cats any way. If we go with a 4" kit and graft in the OEM Cat how will it affect performance, and sound?? He doesn't want to spend more than 300 on a system.

PS wich is a better size 4" or 5"???

under 400 your looking at more then likely a non stainless steel version..
some have allowances for adding the cat back in..you basically sawzall out your cat off the oem system and put it on...I saw one clever fellow that took his to an exhuast ship they cut his cat tips off, and welded 4" sections thus he had 4" all the way. some trucks are even built without cats. I am pretty sure the banks kit has directions on doing thiers leaving the cat to give you an idea , though they run more like 600.00

have a look at some of the sponsors sites though , like dieselsite , defuser and others, most of them have an entry level kit, that isn't a full polished stainless system.

by keeping the cat the hp loss is very minimal , vs what you would think. assuming it isn't clogged.

another choice is a walker btm muffler basicallyt a specific summit or napa model that will give you 80% of a 4" exhuast at about 75$....

Agreed. For $300 you're defintely in the alumized exhaust, not stainless.

I got a great price from dfuser.com on my exhaust, but it's stainless and out of that price range. I know MotoBlue makes a less expensive exhaust, so perhaps check there.

I can get you a 100% stainless steel kit for a little over $300 shipped. It comes with welded on hangers and a lifetime warranty unlike all the cheap aluminized kits out there.

None of the 99-03 7.3L kits are going to have a provision to bolt the factory cat back in place. You will have to do some fabbing.

Let me know if you are interested.

My 2000 did not have a cat from the factory. Does a 99 have one? Is it early or late 99? Mabe you have looked but don't assume it has one.

My '02 doesn't have one either, I always assumed cats came after '03. I wonder what decides cat or no cat. You would think that anything that burns fuel in Ca would have a cat.. But not so. I do like the fact we are smog exempt here in good 'ol Ca.

i think it was some of the manual trans that came with cats in the 7.3's... just what i heard...

I think it was the ones with manual trans. My '02 handshaker had(er, I mean, still has, look under the truck, it's still there) one.

All "early" '99s had a diesel catalytic converter. All 2001-up 7.3L stick shifters with 275 HP had a catalytic converter. None of the other '99-up 7.3L PSDs had a cat.

Your best bet is to have a muffler shop do the install. They can cut off the cat from the old system and install it in the new exhaust system. If the cat is not stopped up with soot, then it won't affect performance. But a good muffler shop will probably charge around $75 to do the deed.

If the cat is stopped up, you can buy new ones to replace it with. There are even diesel cats with 4" inlet and outlet on the market. Do an internet search on "diesel catalytic" and you'll find them. But your $300 budget just got whoomped on. :read: And pay attention! Diesel cats are different than other cats.

I'd double check that stainless kit for $300. I have no knowledge against this sposor or anything like that, but that sounds way low. Most aluminized kits cost right around $300. Not to say this sponsor can't have a great deal tho!

Good luck.

BTW : My 2000 (late 99 manf'd) has no cat.

No need to check. This is our top selling 7.3L kit and they go out the door daily. The kit is 100% stainless, comes with a muffler, welded on hangers, and a lifetime warranty. I have been in business since 2002 and a vendor here shortly thereafter. Not a newbie by any means.:nono: :)

Blk88GT- Thanks for the kind words.:icon_wink:

I know of both MBRP and ARP systems for 340ish shipped...

Nates good people, even if he works around David...

Cut the cat off... Its not labled as a catalist truck anywere on there... be done.

Yea, those are the entry level stainless ones...not available for the Excursion. I had forgotten that those existed when I posted. Probably be a great exhaust for the original poster, as it will will eventually rust, but will last lots longer than aluminized. :)

Thanks from a dodge guy!!

Thanks guys, its always nice to get help even when I am in "forbidden" territory (Dodge/Cummins all the way way for me :D) But for my father in-law I guess Ill need help every now and then and here is where I intend to come.

The truck does have a CAT, either that or they chose to have two mufflers, one of which is football shaped. I think we have settled on cutting it out completely. If I can get a hold of stainless for the price DSTRBD says than it sounds like a winner! :D other wise aluminized is our only option. Ill shoot him a PM and see what he can get me.

Again I thank you guys!

D-C out!

Don't do aluminized if he plans on keeping the truck for any length of time.

My 5" Hypermax exhaust is toast. It sucks having to spend money and do all of the work again. Do it right the first time and never look back. The 100 bucks you might save is not worth it.

I have a 1999 and it has a cat on it. I went to a local muffler shop here in NC and they would not take it off the guy told me the law says he can not cut it off.I guess since he did not know who i was and maybe thought i was from the state checking them out was why he would not remove it.

Most exhaust shops wont touch a cat. The possible fines are not worth the risk. In the case though, the cat is not needed nor necessary for that year. Go with a full system and get rid of it. You can handle the the installation yourself, but a buddy sure makes it easier. We are here to help should you have any issues.
