I don't think it eats the tape, but because the tape doesn't seal diesel well it weeps/seeps/leaks so people started thinking it must be eating the tape. I use the PTFE paste for anything hot and/or oily.

 

I use the tape for the threads on sensors and the liquid "thread seal with teflon" for head/manifold bolts that enter water jackets. I haven't had any leaks with either on gassers or oil burners.

I don't know if this will help you, but I work on oil furnaces and on any of the oil fittings we are told not to use any teflon or products with teflon in them when apllying it to the pump fittings on the oil burner. The oldtimers in the business always told us that when the fuel oil mixes with teflon, it breaks down and can gum up the fuel pump. So I never use it . May or may not help you, just thought I'd add my 2 cents.

 

Regarding ovens, this may be true, but due to heat (temp.)

 

hmm, I have had no problems with it yet, it was just one of 'those' questions. it makes sense that if it did break down it could possibly get stuck and clog a pump though.

I'm kinda with Chuckster though, I have been using a lot of the liquid thread sealant lately, it's so much easier to use.

 

Myself and other mechanics I've worked with have used it for over 30 years on tapered pipe fittings/hose and as far as I know I've never heard of any problems with it with diesel fuel, hyd. oil, engine oil, propane lines, etc. The main thing is wind it the right direction and start it a thread or two back so no bits of it get in the fuel or hyd. system.
