I will be changing my tranny fluid for the first time...what is the correct amount of mercon sp to refill ? this change includes both filters plus the converter.

I think the pan is 7 - 8 quarts, and overall it was 17 quarts. Do a search, there have been threads recently on this. This is also a how to FAQ somewhere. I'll try to find it for you.

Thanks for the reply....the owners manual said 17.5 qts, but then again it also said 15 qts for the engine when it's really 13.5

Actually you're gonna need 20 qts /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif Read HERE

SouthPaw provided the link I was looking for. That seems to be the best How to that I have seen.

Also, as I was looking around someone said the capasity was 19.2 quarts. So I would by at least 24 quarts.

Southpaw,

Thanks...yep 20 to be on the safe side if your going to flush it so you have enough if you end up pumping out a little more than expected...and to allow adjustment to the level after its complete. But the capacity is 17.5 quarts.

Ignore all advice here if you are doing a change at home. You can NOT get all the fluid out in fact not even half of it. If you do this at home measure how much you take out and replace it with the same. Then check. You can get a lot more out if you start the engine with the drain pulled and then shift from drive to reverse to all gear selections and back to reverse several times. This will get out several more quarts. You can also pull the filter and run the engine more so getting more fluid out. This is a mess.....been there done that. In this instance your dealer with the flush machine can do a much better job.......and don't go to jiffy lube. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif I wouldn't let those guys back my car/truck out of the garage much less put a wrench on it.

Yes it is very important to measure exactly what comes out ....Did you even read the article? You should also pay attention to who I listed as the source for my information. It is much better to disconnect the return line than running it with the drain plug pulled. The old fluid came out so fast from the return line (due to the fact that I was able to get it to 180deg) there is no way it would drain from an open plug from a pan that is being filled at the same rate...in addition you cannot observe any air bubbles in this manner...plus you are running the pump dry which is something I personally would not do even with residual lubrication from old fluid.

Tranny capacity: 17.5 quarts

Removed 7 quarts from pan: 17.5 - 7 = 10.5

Added 10 quarts to get ahead of the pump: 10.5 + 10 = 20.5

Pumped out 8.75 quarts: 20.5 - 8.75 = 11.75

......so 7 + 8.75= 15.75 I'd say that's more than half

Also after having the opportunity to inspect the fluid after the flush I see no need to try and get every ounce out that fluid was in impeccable condition.

I have read at least two different articles on flushing the trans. Both seem pretty complicated to me, but I am just not really inclined to do a lot of mechanical stuff with my vehicles. Basic fluid and filter changes are about as much as I care to tackle. I have no problems with changing the oil and filter & doing the fuel filters.

My opinion, FWIW, is that it would be beneficial to do a drain and refill and remote filter change every 10K miles. I plan to have the dealer do my first flush at 30K then get on a schedule of drain and fill every 10K miles.
