Am looking at used 6.0's that are over 150k on engine and am curious if they are consistently getting 300k or more. I would hope these engines can hit 400k with the bullet proofing required especially a oil bypass.

Thanks.

Not to 300k yet but I just hit 207,XXX and I've had some issues, like the HPOP just went out but overall she's been running strong with minimal problems. These 6.0s are strong engines...as long as they're taken care of.

There is a guy on FTE that is at 500k miles.

Lots of posts by people in the mid-to-high 200k's - even a few over 300k.

I don't recall ANY of them talking about oil bypass filters - that wouldn't be high on my list as a necessary item anyway.

Most folks talk about injectors going between 200 and 250k miles. The early year engines will need HPOPs most likely, but the later model year HPOPs can probably go the distance (as a general rule anyway).

Oil coolers, EGR coolers, and FICM's are the most common issues. Addressing these and preventing over-boosts seem to have reduced the number of head gasket issues (at least on stock engines).

Keep your fuel pressue at the proper level, use proper fluids and filters (oil, coolant, tranny fluid, differentials, brake fluid, power steering fluid) and change them at the proper intervals, etc. Get gauges and watch a few of the critical parameters (EOT, ECT, system and FICM voltages, boost, EGT, fuel pressure) and you can catch issues early - that will save you some money!

05 at 200K and the usual headaches. Thought about trading it in for a new Charger and changed my mind. Put in new leather seats and getting a new paint job instead.

Should I buy?

I have the opportunity to get my hands on a 2005 F250 6.0L V8 32V DDI OHV Turbo Diesel. The catch? It's over 290K. The dealership offering it says they've replaced the E.G.R., oil cooler, high pressure fuel pump and front end ball joints. They're offering it for $9,800 with a KBB of $17,800 and NADA at $15,000. CARFAX is clean and it's a one owner (albeit commercial) vehicle.

Should I bite, or is it too good to be true? I'm thinking about going down for a test drive but don't want to waste my time if it's a lemon. I see from other posts here that some owners have gotten over 250K, and am just trying to get an idea of the average longevity of the engine.

(This would be my first diesel.)

If you hunt around, you can find a better deal than that

I know this is an old post but my boss has a 6.0 he bullet proofed at 80,000 miles and head gasket blew at 200,000. This truck is used everyday for heavy hauling. Trailers loaded with logs for tree service. It is one of the best it hauls like there's nothing back there it's a beast. He fixed the head gasket and it is still working hard. If you can find a good deal on a 6.0 and do the work yourself or find a shop with reasonable prices go for it. There amazing when you work them just a smooth towing machine.
