Wiring Question?

I've been trying to find a short for the past few weeks in the odometer/speedo and overhead light. It would blow the fuse. I found the short(the easy part). The short was caused by on disconeted bundle of wires under the dash. What I need to know is what this bundle of wires is for and how to reconnect. The only thing that does not work are the power locks and the light that come on when the doors are opened. The wires that were cut are located just above the shifter(standard) where there is a quick connect(quite easy to see, very low not up under the dash at all) I also found a black box which looked like it should have quick connect type plug on it at about the distance where the cut wires would reach. It it just above the gas pedal. The color of the wires are:

Red...10 gauge wire
Black...10 gauge wire
Green(light)...16 or 18 gauge wire
White...16 or 18 gauge wire

The "black box" has the id of VF2TB-10D840-AA with 7 tabs.

The wires appeared to be cut by the previous owner and used for something. I just want to hook everything back to the way it's supposed to be. And perhaps my door lights will come back to life.

Does the truck have a trailer brake controller?
The size and color would be standard for the trailer brake controller. If so, you should find a connection near parking brake to disconnect them.

It may have at one time, the black box is not a brake controller. Also the wires are from the factory, or at least they look that way. There are no wires going near the parking brake from this bundle.

That is the QD for trailer brakes. The guage wire is the give away.

I had a 93 F250 that was doing a similar fuse problem with the interior light. It turned out to be screws that were to long that hold the light assy to the cab (note: it was a standard cab XLT). Sounds crazy but the cab would ground out through the attachment screws. Came to find out there was a TSB or something like it on the screws. If I remember correctly.....the wire was light green with yellow stripe or light blue???? Hope this helps. Oh BTW the wire finally shorted inside the bundle near the PB and I had to repair/replace numerous wires....!

Forgive my ignorance, but what is "QD"? Also, where was this screw that was too long? On one of my trucks, the third brake light was shorted and melted the plastic where the bulb was. Never blew a fuse though. Strange.

Maybe the guage of wire was too small to blow the fuse...wire can only draw so much through it...but that still doesn't explain why the insulation didn't melt on the wire somewhere else. Was the short through just a few strands of the wire, or the whole wire grounded out? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

I believe in this instance QD means Quick Disconnect.

There are wiring schematics for an 86' HERE. Won't be 100%, but I'd be willing to bet a lot of it is the same, especially the choice of wire colors.
