You've resurrected an 18-year-dead thread. No, Ford didn't re-format VINs. W means 4-door; 2 means F250; 6 (or almost any even digit) means 4WD. The bed length & front axle model are not encoded in the VIN.

Thank you, Steve83. I've been searching for a couple of weeks for detailed information. I'm having a hell of time getting parts for my D50 TTB. When doing searches for parts that include ball joints, I get several conflicting results. So I thought I would decode vin and door tag to verify what I have. 90s model Fords, for some reason, have the most scarce info on the web in my experience so far, regarding VIN and door tag. Yes there are hundreds of how to's on what each digit represents, but no info on what it means so far. Like a complete list of every code option, ect. I've come to learn that D44HD shares axles and spindles/hubs with D50. D50 shares 3rd member gears, bearings, outer Ujoints, knuckles, ball joints, spindles and locker assy with D60. This would explain why everyone has such a hard time finding a complete front end kit (tie rods ect.) for the D50 TTB. I can find them all day for D44 and D60. D50 is murky water at best. So I have to search for D60 ball joints for a D50 and Tie rod kit for a D50. Nobody has a complete kit with both. However, all the seals for D50 are pretty easy to find. I think I'll just order the Dana/Spicer service manual and "decode" things from there. The PDF helps but when zooming in, it has a distorted resolution. Can't read it. One thing I don't see all the forms talk about is the difference between HD, XL, XLT, and Super Duty. This is one of many reasons why I seek a complete decoder. I know this is a long read but I'm new to the well optioned 4x4 full size Ford trucks, not new to late-model Fords in general. Any light you could shed on any these matters will be very appreciated.

...what each digit represents, but no info on what it means...
That page I linked above explains each digit, at least twice; and it links to the explanation of VIN format. Did you read all the way down the page?
Like a complete list of every code option, ect.
The VIN does not contain option codes. Lookup services & sites that purport to show options for a VIN are trying to relate the VIN to a database of as-built data from the automaker. But Ford didn't keep great as-built records back then for itself or anyone else to use, so those services don't work well on these trucks or any older Ford.
...a complete front end kit (tie rods ect.)...
Kits are usually collections of cheap junk that someone is trying to unload. Never buy them, unless they contain EACH part you've already chosen, and cost less than buying those parts separately. If each part is not listed, skip it. This page is where I keep PNs I've found for my '97 F250HD:
I think I'll just order the Dana/Spicer service manual...
That would only address the housings, gears, & hubs - not steering, and probably not brakes.
The PDF...
Which one?
...the difference between HD, XL, XLT, and Super Duty.
XL & XLT are just trim levels, which varied by year, and there were several other trim levels (Custom, Lariat, XLS, XLTS, Nite, Lightning, Eddie Bauer...). SuperDuty means the platform of F-series >8500GVWR since the line was split in '97/98. HD means '97 F250s >8500GVWR that were still built on the '80-96 platform, to distinguish them from the 7-lug '97 F250LD built on the new F150 platform.

As you learn them, you should put ALL your truck's details & history (as much as you know) into your signature(<-click that) so it shows with each post, as that VIN page explains. Phone apps don't always show signatures, so you may need to switch to a real browser in desktop mode on your phone, or just use a desktop/laptop computer. Put your location (nearest city) in your profile &/or signature, & upload an avatar of the truck. Not all its details are relevant to every issue, but you don't necessarily know which ones are relevant, so just put everything in as soon as you find each detail. The more pics you post (NOT in your sig) of the truck, engine, wiring, labels, & undercarriage, the more likely we can help you.

But you should start a new thread for your truck instead of continuing in this old thread.

There should be ID numbers on your axle, assuming you can read them. Later axles use a sticker, that many times is faded out or just gone. But HERE is a site that might help you. Once you have the BOM (Bill of Materials) from the axle, you can look up just about anything and find the Dana PN.

Yeah, my front axle is pretty messy. I'm yanking it out currently. When I get it cleaned up, I will check to see if there are any stamped numbers on the ttb's. The tag is definitely missing and the only way I could tell it was a Dana 50 is the big D50 stamp on the third member housing. I managed to get some part numbers off the axle seals and u-joints as well.
