Sorry if this is in the wrong place new too forums and such. So I bought an old 7.3 that I've loved so far but recently she stalled and died on me. I put a new battery in her, checked fuses, filters even checked some of the sensors and still nothing. I have a wait to start light and rpms when cranking but no smoke. The fuel bowl dosent fill very fast when cranking so maybe fuel pump? Like I said I don't know much and I don't want to just buy parts without good reason thanks for any advice!

You could have a number of different problems.

Start with the fuel. Test the fuel pressure on the Schrader valve on the side of the filter housing. You can use a pencil type of air gauge to do this, just wrap a rag around the gauge so that you don't spray diesel. Cranking the engine over you should see 20psi+ to get the engine started.

Also have you tried switching tanks? How much fuel do you have in the tanks? Check the oil level in the high pressure oil pump. There is a plug that you can take out on the top of it. The oil should be near the top.

You might also look into FORScan to run on your smartphone along with a ELM 327 Bluetooth adapter to read live data from the sensors on the truck.

Thanks for the reply I have about 10 gals in each tank and I added a hair extra where im at the bottom of full on the dipstick. When turning it over the hpop fills up about 3/4 the way. Does that do the same as a scanner a shop or something would have? Haven't had time this morning to try the psi in the bowl gonna try it I'm a bit.

FORScan works just as good as most of the more expensive shop scanners out there, but there is a learning curve to it. On their forum page you can read on what adapter to get.

We also had a member do a pretty good write up on it

It sounds more like a fuel problem. The fuel pump on these engines is a two stage pump. It pulls from the tank and sends fuel through the filter and back to the pump to pressurize it to send the fuel to the injectors. There are some that will have a restriction in the fuel lines from the pump where not enough fuel will be delivered. There is a plastic foot in the fuel tanks that will start to come apart and pieces of it will end up in the fuel lines and stick in the selector valve blocking the fuel flow.

I've been thinking fuel but first time working on a diesel so I'd rather ask you guys who have wayyy more experience. Oooo ok I'm barely getting fuel into the bowl its like a kids water plastic water gun. So I'll check on the selector and take the lines off and clean them. Then I'll look at the tanks themselves better I gotta get a floater in my back tank anyways.

Now test the fuel pressure while it is running.

It should be 50 psi+ if not you might have a weak fuel pump.
