GCWR is 26,000 pounds for either the Y2K F-450 or F-550 with diesel engine. The F-550 has more GVWR, but not more GCWR. Therefore the old saw: The F-450 is for towing, the F-550 is for hauling.

30,000 lbs GCWR requires High Capacity Trailer Tow Package
The high capacity towing pkg was not available in the Y2K model year.

My old rememberer says it was first available in the middle of the 2001 model year. The first mention I've seen of it is the 2001.5 RV and Trailer Towing Guide, where it says it was 30,000 pounds. It's in a May 2001 order guide, but not in an early Y2K order guide. No mention of it in the first edition of the 2001 RV and Trailer Towing Guide. It stayed 30,000 thru 2004 model year. The 2001 order guide includes this: "NOTE: Requires 7.3L Power Stroke® Engine, Automatic Transmission, 4x2, 176" WB and 4.88 LS axle."

Beginning with 2005 model year the high capacity trailer tow pkg was available with stick shift or automatic, and with 4x2 or 4x4. Here's part of the blurb from the 2005 F-550 order guide:
TRAILER TOW PACKAGE, HIGH CAPACITY (535)

• Requires 6.0L PowerStroke™ diesel engine and 4.88 Limited Slip
rear axle (X8L)
