Perkins 1104D problems

I’m from a small family owned tree business in upstate NY and we just bought a Brush Bandit 1590xp chipper with the 1104D Perkins in it at an auction. We like to do all our own mechanic work to keep costs down and to ensure it’s is done to our standards, but this one has us stumped! There have been a few hands in this machine so we started from square one. Turns out someone contaminated the fuel so we drained the tank, put new filters on and flushed the lines. We have checked plugs, fuel flow and a couple sensors but nothing will work, but it will fire off a shot of starting fluid. We timed the motor and injection pump🤞🏻, and also bought a new fuel shut off solenoid with no results. We have fuel up to coming out of the pump before the high pressure rail. HELP!! I’ve tried to contact Perkins with no response! Do we need to bleed the pump? Or where do we go from here? Thank you

So the engine will fire off with ether and then die when the ether is exhausted?

Have you confirmed the low pressure fuel pressure to the pump?

You have already replaced the fuel shut off solenoid and re-timed the pump. I would bleed air out of the pump as you are considering.

As you no doubt know, using ether on a diesel with GPs is discouraged.

I am curious where the fuel is obstructed. If you have pressure upstream from the IP then do you have fuel downstream from the IP?

Do you have a fuel smell in the exhaust? Is there even any exhaust smoke?

What was the type of fuel contamination that you found originally?

This might be a page from your Repair Manual. It discourages cracking a fuel line for bleeding air.

That manual that Arctic Driver posted says cracking the HP lines is not necessary, but if they've been filled with hydraulic fluid, you may need to do that to purge out the fluid and get fresh diesel to the injectors. I don't think it would hurt to do that.
