terrible fuel leak...fuel in the valley (Updated issue corrected)

2002 7.3 4x4

yesterday I noticed a "diesel" smell while at a red light...today I let my truck run for about 15 minutes and went out a looked under it...OMG !!!!! terrible diesel leak!!! it was disguised as an oil leak because it was coming from the dust cover between the engine and tranny...turned the truck around so the back of the engine was sort of on a down-hill grade and it got worse!!!!! leaking was so bad that diesl was running down the the top of the tranny and looked like it was coming from the back corner of the tranny....

valley has diesel in it, back of the fuel filter appears to be dry....

it has to be coming from the top somewhere, leaking down across the back of the block and across the tranny....

truck runs like a new one...I just cant locate the dang leak!!!!!!! filled up about a 6 oz glass in about 5 minutes, so I know she's pouring...just stumped on where to look...

any help would be appreciated

There's a hole in the back of the valley that lets fluids drain back into the bell housing. When looking for a leak, always go up till you don't find any fluid leaking.

The fuel line is available thru Ford or International dealers. But if you go to International, you'll need to give them your engine serial no and describe the part, as the PN I posted is a Ford number.

It runs from the passenger side of the fuel filter bowl, along the valley and under the turbo pedestal, where there's a metal hold down bracket the may have rubbed a hole in the line from vibrations. It attaches to the rear of the passenger side head.

As far as what you have to take off to get at it, that depends on how big your hands are. You'll likely need to remove the bracket holding the glow plug and intake air heater relays, and possibly the turbo spider. Getting the tube loose from the rear of the head will require a crowsfoot wrench on a 3/8 ratchet or you can get to it from underneath with a short open end or line wrench if you have long enough arms.

Another option is to cut the tube at the bracket and reconnect it with some fuel hose and clamps to repair the leak.

on edit: Looks like blue99stroker beat me to the punch with some good info. I MIGHT be a slow typist too. :)

the passenger side fuel line can be had from dieselorings for a good price.

you will need two new vibra-lock o-rings from the mas well.

the passenger line commonly leaks because the clam p that holds the line in place at the turbo pedestal wears a hole through the line.

when you fit the new line put a piece of rubber around the new line where it is secured by the clamp.

you will need to unhook the downpipe and push it back. easiest way for me to reach the fitting was to reach under the turbo pedestal with a wrench and loosen the fitting. or cut the line off right at the rear fitting with a sawzall, then use a ratchet to get the fitting off.

and welcome to the site, next time make a new thread.

Same Problem

I have this same problem. Thought at first it was the O-rings...did that fix and still am leaking....now worse and from what I believe to be the bell housing. There is a pool of diesel in the valley also.

(Also, dropped the tank and cleaned the filters and put in a new fuel pump on the rail)

Can you give me some pointers regarding your fuel line fix on the passenger side.

Where did you get the new line?
What needs to be removed to allow access (if anything)?
What you would do different?

Anything else that would aid in the fix...

Thanks,
ssolid

fuel leak,

i have the same leak, i think the line should take about an hour to fix, there is 2 the one on the driver side goes to the front of the head the passanger side goes to the back of the head, figures we seem to have the passanger leaking, still not a big deal,, get some pipes loose and out of the way clean the valley, replace the lines,,, you should do both, ford did not have anything for me,,, i was told the part numbers in my factory manual,, the real big thick books from ford, did not mean any thing so international may be the only way to go,,, im going to do mine thursday 12/11/09 ill post the final results, barring i can find the parts,,,,

problem ended up being the fuel line on the passenger side(from filter to head)...it actually had 2 holes rubbed in it..one pin hole and the other a good sized one near the bracket that holds it in place........all is good!!!!

update 2....still need help

Dried the valley completely, including the part closest to the fuel/water seperator....the leak is definitly not coming from the fuel/water seperator.....it is coming from somewhere under the y-pipe....what in the heck can it be???!!!! cant get a light or a mirror down there to see the issue....I lost almost a 1/4 tank of fuel in 38 miles today....to have a leak that bad and it not be plain as day boggles my mind!!!!!

Question 1....can you take the y-pipe off and crank the truck????? allowing me to look into the valley while its running and find the dang leak????

Question 2.... if it is the passenger side fuel return line that has a hole rubbed in it...is that a part that a ford dealer would have in stock???

Try replacing your fuel bowl drain valve O-rings before you get too carried away. That solved my valley pond, even tho there was no noticeable drip. It just accumulated over time. Super cheap fix too.

Me too

I had the same problem not long ago. I put several lights up on top of the engine and valley and then took my time and stared down into the valley from multiple angles. I even used a small mirror in there to try to find the leak. I was able to tell the leak location, even though I couldn't see the leak. I put my hand down in there and eventuallly figured out that a steel line goes from the fuel filter assembly to the back of the passenger side head and it was leaking at a bracket. I removed stuff till I got down to it and the bracket that held it had rubbed a hole in it. It you take your time and don't get in a hurry, its not hard to replace. I think the line was less than $50.

Might try cleaning it up really really well. Then get some blue shop towels and place them under the filter and fuel lines and around the fitting. Start and run the try for a couple seconds, shut it off and look for the darker blue areas on the towels.

update.....

climbed over the top of the engine with it running....confirmed the valley has diesel in it...lots of diesel!!!!! especially under the turbo....it has a big pool of diesel in the back....checked for a leak around the fuel filter...none found....completely dry....cant see anything leaking into the valley.....opened the drain on the fuel filter and it poured onto my driveway, but it leaked from a differnt location( about halfway back on the passenger side)....

reached as far under the fuel filter assembly as possible and it appears dry...

with a leak this bad it would seem like it should stand out like a sore thumb!!!!

again...any input would be appreciated
