Truck shut down while driving...

Today on my way home from work my truck shut down out of no where while driving. It didnt stutter or shake or anything, i didnt even notice right away that it shut off. when i tried to restart it, everytime i turned the key over the truck would keep cranking for 15 seconds or so even if i didnt hold it. I pulled some codes through my DashDaq, stupidly I cleared them to see if it would help and didnt write them down but i know one was a low fuel rail pressure code and one was an engine power limited type code. after 10-15min of screwing around with the truck it started back up and ran fine all the way home. Anyone have any idea what happened here?

It sounds like a fuel system issue. The fact that it was trying to start (the PCM controls the starter) and suddenly returned to normal makes me suspect something like a wiring fault going to the HPFP, particularly since a chafing wiring harness to the HPFP is a know issue.

Thank you very much. I still dont understand why it would keep trying to turn over after I let the key go....

These trucks have OTIS - One Touch Integrated Start, the PCM controls the starter and the key just tells the PCM you want to initiate a start cycle. The PCM will turn on the starter and will turn it off wither when the engine RPM exceeds cranking RPM by some threshold, or when the max cranking time has elapsed i.e. your 15 seconds. All you need to do is tap the key to start for a split second to start the truck. I believe turning the key to off will terminate a cranking cycle in progress as well.

Well you learn something new everyday haha, thanks for clearing that up for me.
Does this issue seem like the HPFP? It just seems weird up until yesterday there was no sign of any sort of an issue....

I would bet it had to due with a EGT sensor or a high temp issue.

As for a fuel issue have you been changing your filters? Draining the fuel/water separator?

Have you considered taking it to the dealer for an inspection, DieselFord184? I’m available to help by forwarding the details to the Customer Service Manager in your area. If you want me to lend a hand, send a PM with your contact info, mileage, VIN, and dealer name/state.

Thanks for taking the time to offer your knowledge, guys. :)

When mine had a bad EGT sensor and shut down, it would not crank until much later. (About 2 hours later @ 75 degrees F) I assume when the whole system cooled down enough. It was also giving a code that related to the issue directly. I do not recall the exact code. Blocked it out mentally after the pain in the arse it turned out to be.
